With Lyndsey gone, Thomas learns quickly that he'd best step up his parenting or he'll lose his girls to child services. He also learns that as a single parent with two in diapers he'd best grab whatever food he can whenever he can. After a quick check on the girls, Thomas takes a moment for himself before calling the sitter. He doesn't really need the job, but he likes getting out of the house. A bonus is that he's starting to make some good connections with some of the crime families from the mainland. Thomas slowly learns how to develop a routine. The whenever he feels himself slipping, he locks himself in a bathroom so the girls don't witness him arguing with himself. Thomas spends his afternoons working out and at the library. Then one day, he gets a message from one of his connections, the bosses found a spot they like for a main office. The sign reads imports/exports but Thomas knows what the real scoop is. Knowing how much of a thrill he gets from lifting items, he quits his job at the police station and goes to work for the mafia, where his skills are appreciated and no one cares that he's insane. When the new sitter who seems a bit snooty coment's on the fact that Isabella doesn't talk much for her age Thomas checks the parent guide on his phone and also call's his mom, Stevie, for advice. Armed with information Thomas sits with Isabella and helps her build her vocabulary. Thomas realizes that Julia's transition day has snuck up on him. So per his arrangement he makes the necessary call and throws a party for Julia inviting her mom, Lyndsey, as well as his family. As with Isabella he leaves the honor of bringing Julia to the cake to her mom. Given how frosty Lyndsey is with him, he knows he made the right move. What surprises him is when his great Aunt Mu treats him with respect and compliments him on throwing a good transition day party. Thomas realizes to late that buying matching outfits for his girls might not have been one of his better choices. That blunder aside he quickly learns the new routine with his girls. Just as Thomas thought he had everything down, his phone beeped a reminder that it was time for Isabella to have another transition. Sighing heavily, Thomas made the obligatory call. A random cousin shows up with the rest of the party, Thomas finds her hot. Fortunately Aunt Mu picking a fight with his half-sister Lacie over how to cook fish chills his ardor before he makes an ass of himself at his daughters transition party. Isabella is shy when her mom, Aisha, goes to pick her up so this time Thomas gets to do the cake honors. Aisha is not happy with Thomas for putting Isabella in the bathroom for her transition. Neither is Isabella for that matter. The day after Isabella's transition, she pester Thomas as he's trying to care for Julia. Thomas is quick to point out that she's old enough to travel around town on her own. HE gives her a few basic rules and then sends her on her way. Isabella is more than happy to hang at the fishing spot and play with other kids while her dad focuses on her baby sister. Looking in the fridge for dinner Thomas realizes that the only leftovers is cake. Knowing he'll be in hot water with his mom if he doesn't have something besides cake available for his girls Thomas attempts to make a simple pot of mac 'n cheese. Staring at the results he's tempted to toss it, but it's marginally edible so he puts the leftovers away. Due to work hours, Thomas tends to let Isabella get away with far more than a parent who's present and has a better grasp on reality or sanity would allow. He doesn't try to debate food choices with her, as he is still burning more food than he'd like. He doesn't understand how his mom made cooking look so effortless and easy. Thomas somehow managed to mess up the party invites for Julia's transition day and no one showed up. So he and the girls had a quite evening to themselves. Julia comments on how much she loves the cake dad got for her transition, and Isabella cautions her to make it last because their dad can't cook for a hill o' beans. After sitting and talking for a few hours both girls turn in for the night. As they lay in darkness, Julia asks Isabella if their dad is always this distracted with other stuff and Isabella says that Thomas, their dad, does seem to love and care for them, but really is more absent even when present than other parents. At least that's her impression from other kids at school. The upside Isabella commented is that they're pretty much free to do what they want so long as they keep the grades up. Isabella says she let her grades slip once and Thomas almost grounded her for it, because the school called him while he was sleeping. Julia discovers the kids can bake stove that Stevie had gotten, and quickly learns how to use it to make breakfast muffins. Thomas and Isabella compliment Julia on her excellent muffins. They both ask her to make as many muffins as she wants. Tired Thomas heads for sleep, as the girls head off for school. Thomas really likes the new schedule better, it allows him much more than 4 hours of sleep a day. Everyone who'd been invited for Julia's transition day showed up the next evening so the family makes the most of the belated party. Which in turn means he stops making stupid mistakes during heists and no longer gets picked up almost daily by patrol officers. He also knows that the only two reasons why he hasn't been fired is it's his name on the property deed, and he never ratted anyone out while in custody. Thomas stare at the reminders on his phone and wonders where time has gone. It's a double transition day. He's entering his middle years and Isabella will transition to her teen years. He does his best to keep everyone only focused on Isabella's transition. Before he heads off to work for the night. He's not sure that he's eager to have one let alone two in the house. Happily for Thomas he's got a few more days yet before he has to learn what it's like living with two teenage girls.
